We Need to Talk About Kevin is a 2011 British psychological horror movie based on the 2003 novel of the same name. The story follows a mother who tries to live with and come to terms with the atrocities her son has committed.
Wow, this one was grim. The movie plays out as a series of flashbacks to Kevin’s childhood intersected with the aftermath of what transpired. Tilda Swinton puts in an amazing performance as the mother, Eva, as she tries to keep her family together and connect with and understand her increasingly sociopathic son. Speaking of the son, Ezra Miller also stands out with a haunting performance as Kevin. The flashbacks and aftermath stories are cut togther pretty quickly at the beginning. It tends to be a bit disorienting, but the effect keeps you on tilt while the story builds. The movie keeps a pretty dark tone for the duration, and the sense of dread is heavy leading up to the devastating conclusion. This one will stay with you for a while.
I highly recommend this film. Watch if you want to see some powerful performances, an upbeat awesome soundtrack that sounds out of place, and if you are ready to watch the film equivalent to a punch to the stomach from Mike Tyson.
