On this week’s episode we discussed the horror-comedy (or comedy-horror) Tucker & Dale vs Evil. This presented the perfect opportunity to offer up a double feature that has been kicking around in my head for a few weeks. As you know, I try to pair up an older movie with a more recent movie, and this week also includes something I love to see: more baddies than you can count. Between the two films we see well over 70 different monsters/bad guys/etc. (Yeah, you heard me!) Oh yeah, the comedy part. They’re horror-comedies.
Movie #1 – Waxwork

S: Zach Galligan, Deborah Foreman, David Warner / W/D: Anthony Hickox
The most unlikely people to make up a group of friends (including the kid from Gremlins) are invited to a private midnight showing of the mysterious new Waxworks that has seemingly appeared out of thin air in their quiet neighborhood. Upon arrival, they are greeted by a butler – a little person straight out of Oz – and are asked to have a seat in the parlor. Their host arrives, clad in a smoking jacket straight from the Hugh Hefner fashion line at Versace. He invites them into the museum and tells them to enjoy themselves. What the teens soon find out is that each scene depicted in wax is waiting for the final piece. One by one, the hormone bags of skin cross the velvet ropes and are swept away to another dimension; a dimension in which they will never escape. Unbeknownst to the virgin and Billy Peltzer from Gremlins, a secret society of monster hunters have been waiting for this exact time. An epic battle of man vs. monsters commences with all our favorite monsters making appearances, including Thing from The Addams Family.

Movie #2 – The Cabin In the Woods

S: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford / W: Joss Whedon, Drew Goddard / D: Drew Goddard
We open by meeting our standard horror movie characters: The Virgin, The Slut, The Jock, The Black Guy, and The Stoner… oh, and the secret underground corporation keeping the world from being destroyed by appeasing an ancient god. Five unlikely college friends travel to a remote cabin for a little weekend getaway of boozing, boning, and baking. Meanwhile, all is falling into place for a team of scientists working to keep the God only they know about in check by offering it delicious human blood. The puppets fall into place for the puppeteers to do their work with a little help from our favorite monsters… that is until the plan falls apart, and Joss Whedon kills everybody.

Monsters and comedy. Like peanut butter and jelly, Salt ‘n Peppa, and yogurt and vinegar: you never know what you’re REALLY going to get.
