The Voices is a 2014 black comedy-horror movie that stars Ryan Reynolds as Jerry, a pleasant factory worker that keeps a smile on his face. Life is pretty simple for Jerry, but once his pets start talking about his murderous intentions, things start to get a little complicated.

I’ll reiterate my stance on horror-comedies. For me, most either water down the horror aspect or water down the comedy and try to force it. The Voices, however, really strikes a perfect balance of dark comedy and truly unsettling scenes. Ryan Reynolds plays our mentally unstable main character wonderfully, and really creates a sympathetic monster. You truly get the feeling the Jerry doesn’t want to do bad things, but due to his situation, bad things keep happening. The cast is excellent, from the voices of Jerry’s pets, the murderous cat Mr. Whiskers, and the dopey, lovable dog Bosco, to the wonderful performances of Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick, and Jacki Weaver. The movie is shown from Jerry’s eyes so we see his reality which is very clean, happy, and innocent. It is only until we see things from the eyes of the other characters that you really get an idea of how terrible things have actually gotten. This difference in perception is pulled off excellently and creates a very unsettling dynamic. The writing here is a real star and had me laughing while simultaneously deeply disturbing me.

I can’t recommend this movie enough, please give this a watch if you want to see a great dark comedy with a wonderful cast, a couple of foul-mouthed talking animals, buckets of blood, and an off-putting, perfectly weird song and dance number at the credits.
