[Show Notes] #75 Sci-Fi/Horror w/ Chris Kelley

Guest

Chris Kelley (Montee Men, The Beginning Gardener)

Chris Kelley

I (guess I) first met Chris Kelley nearly 20 years ago in high school. I can’t say that I recall that, but I’ve drank a lot of Diet Mt. Dew since then so my memory’s a little fuzzy. I do remember my second instance of meeting Chris, though. A house (then) called “The Power Pad” was a disgusting punk/metal house that served as living quarters for those brave enough to count sheep there. Through a mutual friend, I would end up at the different house shows they’d have and ended up meeting a lot of people, most of whom I don’t remember. Chris, though, I remembered.

Last year we had Chris’s wife Makayla on the the show, and it was overdue to have Chris come and hang for a (long) while. Like most of our guests, they’re first greeted by my four-year-old son, Eben. As a parent I can easily tell who’s comfortable around kids and who isn’t. (I get it, kids aren’t for everyone. Most of them are annoying as shit anyways.) But Chris was right at home and started sharing battle wound stories (Eben is in a full-arm cast right now). After the kid went to bed, Chris and I chatted while we waited for Kevin. Just from our little (re)introductory conversation, I could see Chris had a big heart, and a great sense of humor. I knew we were going to have a great night.

A great night was had. So great, in fact, that we didn’t wrap until after midnight (sorry Makayla). After Chris left, Kevin and I both agreed that this was one for the books, as they say. We had one of our best (and longest) conversations about our feature presentation, and we covered a TON of ground even before that. We covered recent watches, new releases, sci-fi/horror, Alien, we played music, AND Chris got to play the 7 Deadly Questions.

Sci-Fi/Horror

We defined what “sci-fi/horror” meant to us, talked about the history of it, contextualized it, and listed off several movies we considered to fit the criteria. Below are some of the movies mentioned.

Attack the Block, Cloverfield, Critters, Cube, Event Horizon

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Monsters, Night of the Creeps, Pitch Black, Slither

Sphere, Starship Troopers, The Blob, The Fly, The Host, The Thing

Feature Presentation

Alien
Alien {1979 / R / 1h 57m}
W: Dan O’Bannon, Ronald Shusett
D: Ridley Scott
S: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto

“Aboard the commercial ship “Nostromo,” things hit a bit of a snag on its return home. The crew is woken from hypersleep much earlier than anticipated because of an emergency beacon coming from a nearby planet. Seen any Alien film? Yeah, same thing happens every movie. Despite the clear message being sent from Yaphet Koto angrily chewing his gum, Sheriff Jimmy Brock from Picket Fences thinks it best to check it out. John Hurt takes part in one of the most iconic scenes in cinema, Veronica Cartwright annoys the hell out of anyone with eyes and ears, Ian Holm squirts white goo all over Mr. Koto’s face, and Sigourney Weaver becomes THE female badass all female badasses have strived to become in every movie since. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re talking Alien tonight!”
