The Scum Gutter: No Reason (2010)

directed by: Olaf Ittenbach
runtime: 74 mins

Germany’s resident wizard of gore, Olaf Ittenbach, is a master of making the skin crawl. His films THE BURNING MOON, PREMUTOS, and BLACK PAST are favorites of mine. They are undeniably brutal, and NO REASON is no exception. In NO REASON, A woman named Jennifer is guided through a torturous hellscape by a BDSM Cthulhu man I will refer to as Octopus-head. All she wants is her son back, but Octopus-head is hellbent on teaching her a twisted lesson as they descend through the various blood-soaked layers of a nightmarish purgatory. Can Jennifer escape this allegory of anguish and achieve redemption for her past?

COME ON DOWN to Octopus-head’s Goratorium Outlet! SEE: Gruesome murder! SEE: Ghastly acts! SEE: Golden showers! Blood! Genital mutilation! Blood! Sliced tongues! Gouged eyes! Blood, blood, blood! Freaks, geeks, and weirdos! SEE: Gollum with tribal tats! You can’t make this stuff up, folks!

I think she’ll pull through.

NO REASON is another example of director Ittenbach’s fascinations with death and the afterlife. It could be viewed as a spiritual sequel to THE BURNING MOON as it focuses on journeying through a seemingly inescapable Hell, and watching it certainly feels like some kind of nightmare.

How many fingers am I holding up?

Unearthed Films is bringing this newly scanned and uncut version of NO REASON to Blu-ray, with a release date of May 11, 2021, so gore hounds can mark their calendars and prepare to add this blood feast to their respective collections. Can’t wait? Well Grindhouse Video and Diabolik DVD are accepting pre-orders now!
